Knit Pants: J. Stern Designs Jeans with Christine Jonson Waistband, Vogue 1250 as a Top

These newly completed knit pants are made of a nice 4-way stretch heather gray ponte knit purchased from the local store Homespun in 2012. I think it is a rayon/poly/lycra and was labeled as an Eileen Fisher knit. I used the J. Stern Misses Jeans # 37 pattern for the front, back, and back yoke pieces. For the waistband, I followed the instructions for a wide Stretch Fabric Waistband from Christine Jonson, as posted on her website http://www.cjpatterns.com/documents/Cut2-Issue02.pdf. The pants were slightly too big at the top using the same pattern size as for my jeans in 2012, so I removed approximately 1/2 inch in width from the upper 9 inches of each side seam allowance before sewing on the waistband. I didn't include any pockets. When I started this sewing mashup (in the spring of 2012) I had no idea if it would work, but I really like the result and that I can wear them for travel, a hike/walk, or a work day at the office.

This purple top was made in May 2012 using the Vogue 1250 dress pattern and a lightweight rayon/lycra 4-way stretch knit purchased at Homespun a couple of years ago. To shorten the pattern from a dress, I cut the pattern front at the top of the side darts and cut the pattern back at a corresponding length. I've worn this top a lot and it layers well with a close-fitting cami underneath and a cardigan or blazer over it.

  1. I love the idea of a Ponte jean! I also have used my own version of that waistband on yoga pants and skirts. It's so comfy! I think I am going to borrow your idea for Ponte jeans. :-)

  2. Both of these garments look so comfortable! And good for you, for finishing a UFO.
I think I might have that same purple jersey from Homespun. I made a short sleeve top from it last summer, and I really love the weight of it.

    1. Thanks Dixie. The purple jersey has been great- I first made a summer dress from it and then had enough leftover for this top plus a simple scarf.
